Ethics & Sustainability

ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

FOR NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE

Here at Gecko Jewellery, making sure that our jewellery is ethically and sustainably sourced and produced has always been important to us. Here's more information on how we are continuing to work on practices across the business.

WE ARE A CERTIFIED MEMBER OF THE RESPONSIBLE JEWELLERY COUNCIL

All of the materials used in our jewellery are ethically and responsibly sourced.

The RJC is the global membership and standards body for responsible jewellery throughout the entire supply chain – from mine to retail.

Their ‘Code of Practice’ references key development frameworks, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ILO Principles and UN Global Compact and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

WE ARE SELECTIVE WITH OUR SUPPLIERS

We only use suppliers who align with our ethical practices and sustainability goals.

Part of our sourcing methods are not just about the product, but what the suppliers are doing to sustain the planet. For example, gifting Gecko with re-planted trees for the future.

Our suppliers also regularly update us with their future goals for improvement which feature plans relating to continued increase in renewable energy usage, staff wellbeing and reduction in virgin metals to name a few.

Jewellery often comes with a story and our jewellery has integrity with every piece. All our designs are made to a high quality, going through a thorough QC process to ensure it will last. Our 9ct gold pieces especially are made to be passed down for generations to come.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

As well as sourcing ethical jewellery we are working on sustainable packaging for pouches and boxes.

We now provide packaging made from recycled and recyclable materials for almost all our brands.

Our other packaging and POS materials are also made to last and not be frequently thrown away, meaning that there is less waste.

PRODUCT PACKAGING AND PARCEL PACKING

We are continuing to expand our use of compostable plastic grip bags to store our jewellery, reducing single use plastic.

We have also made changes to the way we package orders, switching from bubble wrap to recyclable and sustainably sourced packing paper. We’ve also swapped plastic tape for brown paper parcel tape.

WE USE RECYCLED SILVER

Our recycled silver comes from a fully audited CoC (Chain of Custody) supplier. This means they can provide evidence and certificates to prove that the silver has come from fully recycled sources.

Our Fiorelli and D for Diamond ranges are now made using only recycled sterling silver. We also have a growing collection of pieces within our Beginnings and Fred Bennett ranges that are made from recycled sterling silver.

We are looking to make more of our collections from recycled silver going forwards.

WE USE RECYCLED LEATHER AND SUSTAINABLY LAB CREATED STONES

Our increasing collection of Fred Bennett Reborn bracelets is made from scraps of leather and recycled in a very similar process to how paper is recycled.

Again, this is something we are currently working on expanding.

We offer a growing collection of pieces that feature sustainably laboratory created diamonds and precious stones such as rubies, emeralds & sapphires. Lab created stones are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined stones but are more sustainable as they reduce the environmental and human toll of mining. Every created stone has a transparent integrated chain of custody with long-term working relationships with our suppliers.

WE DONATE TO CHARITY

We create collections where percentages of all sales are donated to UK charities. These currently include The British Beekeepers Association, Mind, and Barnardos. In 2021-2022 alone, we donated £20,495 overall.

WE CARBON BALANCE OUR PRINTED CATALOGUES

In total during 2021-2022, we offset 13 million tonnes of emissions from our main catalogues alone through planting trees and buying land to be preserved! We will continue to do this going forwards.

Continue to join us during our journey to consistently improve and work towards a better future.
